National Grid, a leading utility provider in the Northeast is now offering an innovative consumer energy platform called ConnectedSolutions to its Massachusetts and Rhode Island customers. This new platform leverages Earth Networks’ WeatherBug Home state-of-the-art technology to help National Grid customers connect and manage smart devices and appliances for their home or business. Through ConnectedSolutions National Grid will provide savings and incentives, to help their customers reduce energy use.
ConnectedSolutions uses WeatherBug Home’s unique ability to integrate proprietary weather data with patented thermodynamic modeling and energy consumption data from connected devices, like smart thermostats. Monitoring weather data is crucial for energy savings because 50% of a home’s energy usage is actually driven by the weather. National Grid found that using WeatherBug Home’s HVAC control and optimization capabilities saved 16.5% in electricity usage when cooling homes compared to HVAC savings from just a connected thermostat.
This IoT centric approach is available in MA and RI now, and National Grid is looking to expand this energy saving capability next into New York. Currently ConnectedSolutions works with Honeywell and ecobee smart thermostats, but overtime it will expand to add other connected devices like washers, dryers, and hot water heaters.
